The crypto asset industry and global financial platforms are bracing for a massive paradigm shift. Speaking during a fireside chat at the Point Zero Forum 2026 in Zurich, Switzerland, Bybit Co-Founder and CEO Ben Zhou revealed that the role of crypto exchanges has fundamentally evolved.
According to him, future platforms will no longer merely serve as meeting places for buyers and sellers to engage in trading. Driven by the adoption of blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and instant settlement systems, exchanges are transforming into global financial infrastructure providers that connect various digital and traditional ecosystems.
One of the primary topics highlighted by Ben Zhou was the rising trend of real-world asset tokenization, or Real World Assets (RWA), within the crypto market. Governments and institutions worldwide are racing to bring conventional assets onto on-chain networks, ranging from money market mutual funds to other financial instruments.
However, Zhou offered a critical note, pointing out that the industry is currently too focused on the token issuance process without considering how long-term liquidity can be sustained.
"Tokenization solves access, not liquidity. Making an asset available globally does not automatically create demand for it. The next challenge is how that liquidity moves across borders and jurisdictions," said Ben Zhou.
To address this, future exchanges will play a pivotal role akin to a major international airport. Rather than just being a place for transaction settlement, exchanges will act as a liquidity network and a connectivity hub that bridges fragmented capital pools across different regions and regulatory regimes.
The implementation of blockchain infrastructure has enabled instant settlement processes. The emergence of this technology cuts out the multi-day cycles typically found in traditional financial markets through clearing houses. Nevertheless, this automation does not automatically eliminate the need for legal compliance. Aspects of trust, governance, and consumer protection remain top priorities for global institutions.
To make it easier to understand, these three pillars of future financial transformation can be broken down through their respective technological roles and long-term value propositions. First, tokenization and RWA work by transforming physical and conventional assets into digital fractions, effectively expanding market access on a global scale. Second, instant settlement utilizes blockchain infrastructure to automate clearing processes, which eliminates traditional multi-day waiting periods and significantly slashes operational costs. Finally, Artificial Intelligence (AI) serves as the ultimate user interface layer, simplifying complex multi-functional platforms by delivering highly personalized financial strategies and automated product matching for users.
Furthermore, the greatest challenge in the coming decade is the issue of fragmentation. The emergence of multiple versions of the same asset across different blockchain networks requires the industry to focus heavily on interoperability (cross-platform capability) so that liquidity does not become fractured.
Alongside discussions surrounding stablecoins and tokenization, Ben Zhou believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be at the forefront of simplifying an increasingly convoluted financial ecosystem.
As exchange platform functionalities expand into payments, wealth management, and digital commodities, manual navigation will become far too complex for ordinary users. This is where AI will step in as a personal financial assistant, automatically connecting a user's specific needs with the most appropriate and efficient product strategies.
What are your thoughts on Ben Zhou's vision? Are you ready to see your go-to crypto exchange turn into a global financial infrastructure hub?
